Preventing weed growth in commercial, industrial, retail and institutional properties, as well as in HOA communities, begins with pre-emergent weed treatment. AME applies this treatment two times a year – early spring and fall, before weed seeds have an opportunity to germinate. This pro-active pre-emergent weed management service consists of the application of a quality herbicide (either granular or sprayable), to prevent weeds from sprouting through the application of an eco-friendly, non-volatile and safe herbicide before seasonal weeds make their appearance.
The advantage of pre-emergent weed control is to prevent broad-leaf and grassy weed seeds from germinating in turfgrass and ornamental beds. We use only selective pre-emergent herbicides that eliminate weed seeds and do not harm ornamental flowers, shrubs, trees and other vegetation. The pre-emergent herbicide will attack weeds in the soil where some hearty weeds can sprout from seeds that have remained inactive for up to 50 years. Our goal as a pro-active landscaping maintenance company is to maintain your turf in a vigorous growth state to keep weeds from becoming established, and then use a pre-emergent herbicide to attack seeds that are carried to your landscaping by wind and bird droppings.
The key to the effective pre-emergent application is timing. In the arid southwester states, pre-emergent herbicides should be applied by March 15 and October 15, before the season’s grass begins to grow, otherwise the weed seeds will have already germinated. Seeds that were blown in during previous growing seasons, or left by bird droppings, can sprout once the soil temperatures begin to warm and seasonal rains fall. If the herbicide is applied too early, or too late for the season, the herbicide will be only partially effective.
Weeds do not grow as well in turf and ornamental beds that are fertilized at correct frequencies, watered and mowed to the proper height. Weeds that do manage to sprout on well-maintained grass will require the occasional use of a quality post-emergent herbicide. A light mist of this treatment is usually all that is needed to effectively eliminate new weeds before they mature and drop seeds to continue the weed-growing cycle.

But, because of a long growing season in the southwest, we also apply a post-emergent herbicide as a spot control measure to eliminate weed growth as part of our overall landscaping management service.
Our landscaping maintenance technicians selectively apply a quality post-emergent herbicide with a hand-sprayer to prevent scarring of the soil and turf and damaging ornamental flowers, shrubs and trees. One application is usually all it takes to kill large stands of weeds.
